What is petroleum resin? What are the main categories?

2022-10-26

Petroleum resin is a kind of epoxy resin with low molecular weight. The molecular weight is generally lower than 2000. It has thermal ductility and can dissolve solvents, especially crude oil-based organic solvents. It has good compatibility with other resin materials. It has high-quality abrasion resistance and aging resistance. Its key performance parameters include softening point, hue, unsaturation, acid value, saponification value, relative density, and so on.

The softening point is a key characteristic of petroleum resin, which means that its strength, brittleness, and viscosity vary with the application, and the required softening point is also different. Under normal circumstances, the softening point in the industrial production of vulcanized rubber is 70°C to 1000°C, and the softening point in the industrial production of coatings and paints is 100°C to 1200°C.

In addition, the level of tonal shift caused by ultraviolet light and thermal effects is also a very important performance parameter. The acid value can be used not only to detect the storage capacity of acid-base metal catalysts but also to detect the carbonyl and carboxyl components of petroleum resin storage due to its oxidation.

The composition of petroleum resin is extremely complex. With the marketing and promotion of its main uses, there are more and more types, which can be roughly divided into five categories:

① Human body fat, cycloaliphatic epoxy resin, generally prepared from C5 fraction, also known as C5 epoxy resin;

② p-xylene epoxy resin, generally made from C9 fraction, also known as C9 epoxy resin;

③ p-xylene-aliphatic hydrocarbon copolymer epoxy resin, also known as C5/C9 epoxy resin;

④Dicyclopentadiene epoxy resin, which is made from dicyclopentadiene or its compounds, is also called DCPD epoxy resin. Because this epoxy resin has unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon groups, it is also called reflective ring Oxygen resin

⑤ Hydrocracking petroleum resin, generally C5 or C9 epoxy resin is brownish red to light yellow and can become milky white or translucent after hydrocracking.

Petroleum resin is mainly used in architectural coatings, adhesives, ink printing, preservatives, and vulcanized rubber modified materials. With the continuous development trend of resin technology, its main uses are also constantly developing. C5 epoxy resin is a category with a faster development trend at this stage, and it is widely used in architectural coatings, printing inks, sealing, bonding and other industries. C9 epoxy resin is widely used in paint, vulcanized rubber, plastic and other industries, and its development and design market prospects are very broad.
